Structural Inequalities in Latin America

"The high levels of inequality existing in the region conspire against development and are a powerful barrier to the eradication of poverty, the expansion of citizenship, the exercise of rights and democratic governance"

¿How inquealities affect Latin American countries?

Causes and effects

Large inequalities

When inequalities are large, they discourage vocational training, obstruct economic and social mobility and human development, and consequently inhibit economic growth.

Apart than economy

Beyond the economic section, inequalities encompass inequality in the exercise of rights, capacities and levels of autonomy. It also includes gender, ethnic and racial, and territorial inequality, among others.

Privilage of culture

It naturalizes social hierarchies and the deep asymmetries of access to the fruits of progress, political deliberation and productive assets.

Covid-19 produces more problems

The document indicates that the gaps between population groups persist: poverty is greater in rural areas, among girls, boys and adolescents; indigenous and Afro-descendants; and in the population with lower educational levels. He adds that the increase in the levels of poverty and extreme poverty would be even higher without the measures implemented by governments to transfer emergency income to households. Governments in the region implemented 263 emergency social protection measures in 2020.

How things start in Ecuador?

Inequality, one of the biggest problems in Ecuadorian society, has been influenced by the political instability that existed until the middle of the last decade and by economic policies little linked to social interest and national reality.

HELP

Some projects

The "Ese Tipo No" campaign aims to: empower women, adolescents and girls; transform stereotypes; promote fairer, more egalitarian societies, free of prejudices; and promote an active role for men in the prevention of gender-based violence.

Provide humanitarian assistance to cover the immediate needs, with emphasis on food and protection needs, of the population affected by the COVID-19 crisis in different locations in the country.

The principles of equality and non-discrimination are at the heart of human rights and help to reduce disadvantage for many reasons and in many areas. Human rights are not restricted to special groups.
